Without student loans I prob would have gotten a Ferrari earlier. And I’d probably also have a GT350 right now as well. But still no house lololol

I’m so glad to be out of that student loan crap. I was only 10k into it which is nothing. Now I need to get out of the hole on a house. Actually I am my house is currently “worth” more than I own on it.

You are just looking at the wrong houses.

Priorities.
But where it the garage? It should be a garage with a little living space above it.

Have you seen the price of houses out there? Pew claims my family is solidly upper class based on our income, but my house cost 50% more than what most of my neighbors paid and we put more down on the thing than my parents have ever paid for any house. That’s why we can’t afford houses. I feel poor because over half our income goes to mortgage payments and housing-related expenses, therefore I have less disposable income than I’ve had since I was in my early 20s.

I hate these crap financial “analyses” of millenials -- whatever those are.
Student loans haven’t prevented me from buying things I want, including a home . It’s amazing how much money you can save by not buying a $7 coffee every morning or eating out every lunch (even though I really want some sushi right now -_- ). Not financing cars helps, too. With the balance on the student loan, I’d rather have the cash in savings/investments than pay it all off to save a few clams each month for now.

Here’s the reason in my neck of the woods:

Nothing you said is wrong, but having been on both sides of the coin, I prefer having a house. Also, I’ve just become everything I said I’d never be : make more, spend more, worry about money, repeat.

The Sodo/Beacon Hill shocks me the most. Planes flying overhead all day, people sleeping on the sidewalk, new 7- figure townhomes everywhere.

Yup. Between mortgage, taxes, and bills, wife and I half of our income on the house. And it’s nothing crazy... 1700 sq. ft. on half an acre. My taxes are a little over $10k a year after the little rebates we get . Thanks NY.

But’s so hip and different and urban and up-and coming and definitely not going to become yet another boring enclave for techbros and money launderers.

It’s a load of B.S.
Federally subsidized s tudent loan payments can be capped at 10% gross household income.

Part of me thinks that area will never fully gentrify like so many are hoping. This isn’t like an already cute/fun Capitol Hill pushing out the artists and various maligned communities; Rainier Ave S is just straight up rough .

But dat avocado toast tho

I live with my parents, in what is considered a starter family home. If I were to buy a similar home it would cost me 6 times what they paid for it.
![]() 10/25/2018 at 15:11 |

Most of me hopes it doesn’t gentrify too much. This region is too generic and bland as it is in terms of residential areas . In this socio-economic reality, there will always be pockets of roughness.

If it had a garage, then it would be correct.

Makes sense, it’s why I got my M3 at 24 and you had to suffer without your Ferrari until you were 26!

It was meant as sort of a mocking joke that millennials are all lumped into one category and the fact that I’ve spent a decent amount of income on my cars. They’re not the reason I don’t own a house thought, but I had bought more fiscally responsible cars, I’d have a whole lot more money. I usually bring my lunch, but I will occasionally eat out, but that’s more for the social aspect. I’ve actually spent a good amount of money going out, but that’s because this is the first time in my adult life I’ve had friends nearby.
![]() 10/25/2018 at 16:05 |

If you have equity in your house, you’re not in a hole. Every mortgage payment = you own more of it. Hell of a lot better than renting.
![]() 10/25/2018 at 16:25 |

Which is why we did it. Plus it’s a duplex so some one pays us rent. Win win
It’s just scary looking at Credit Karma and seeing 2 years worth of income at I owe a bank.
![]() 10/25/2018 at 16:33 |

I would rather eat out for lunch every day than own a house. Probably not the smartest move. But I need to get away from work for a little while. Keeps me sane.

Mortgage balance always looks scary but sounds like you’re on very solid ground.

Nono, that comment had nothing to do you with you. My comment was criticizing sweeping generalizations (in this case, some random clicky article I assume)
about arbitrary groups who are somehow to blame for our economic follies.
![]() 10/25/2018 at 17:26 |

And if I didn’t have student loans, I’d eat out for lunch everyday. Sushi and fancy cars: no; bigly mortgage and student loans: yes. That’s just where I’ve ended up in life.
![]() 10/25/2018 at 17:28 |

If you only owe two years of income, I’d say you’re in R E A L L Y good shape.

To quote the Millennials last week. “It be like that sometimes”

Definitely not in a west coast metro area, or if so, not under 55 years old.

This has been today’s episode of “Dr. Zoidberg and RPM, who live in a place where the median home price is ten times the median household income, try to explain to midwesterners why a $100,000 mortgage is probably not a usurious outrage.”
![]() 10/25/2018 at 17:47 |

Ain’t nobody making payments on those 6MM homes in Medina, as you well know.

100 grand. What do you think I am rich? I paid 80 for my house. It’s probably worth 115 right now.

I would kill most of you on here to owe that little again.

Well, now you’re just gloating.

The planes overhead don’t matter... You just buy the house and then start complaining about the noise! There’s a fella in Portland that took out a line of credit against his house to put up billboards and start a campaign to stop the F-15s from flying out of the ANG base at PDX.
He claims the fighter jets are too noisy, fly too much, there’s no military bases in Oregon, these jets have only recently been flying regularly, blah blah blah...
The base has been there since 1940 and training sorties are generated nearly every single day.

Only 7 months older than my car! Born in the first quarter of the 90's. I’m an old at heart, though haha

What the heck is that dark red patch by Enumclaw? Is that... Puyallup!?
![]() 10/25/2018 at 19:45 |

You could, potentially
, be younger
than me with production lasting until MY 1991 ;)
I’d like a 550 or move into modern with a 458. But it will be many moons until that happens haha
![]() 10/25/2018 at 20:01 |

That’s a nice thought but trust me I’m not younger than you hahaha
My year would be a single mirror, centre lock wheel TR.
![]() 10/25/2018 at 21:34 |

Puyallup is a ways south of there - I think the dark red patch is pretty rural. Probably some random outlier sale to skew the stats.

Either luckyboomers who cashed in on the first tech bubble, old people who bought when that area wasn’t as insane, a few legit entrepreneurs, a few legit tech wizards, and a healthy dose of money where there ain’t no payments being made and there ain’t no questions being asked.
![]() 10/25/2018 at 22:06 |

ha! That’s what I need - a single wide and Viper!

That is a good TR haha
![]() 10/26/2018 at 17:12 |

Honestly the good TR would be whichever one you can still buy tires for.
I know someone who used to have a centre lock TR (I think dual mirror, though), and apparently nobody makes tires in that size anymore . Michelin TRXs and I think metric size too .
![]() 10/26/2018 at 17:33 |

I didn’t realize that! That sounds like a major PITA.
It’s hard finding the original size for the 348 but I’m probably going to throw 18's on at some point. Half of me want s to change a few things (wheels, exhaust, painted targa top, etc.) but the other half loves the car exactly how it rolled out of the factory. So it is staying stock for now.
